malapropism: a roughshod drawing of holly (I am the Best)

Where did Cyprian come from? By that, I mean where did the idea for him come from?
1. It's nothing very interesting, I'm sad to say. I was taking a walk one night, listening to "Battle For the Sun" by Placebo, and Cyprian came standard with the story that popped into my head. I needed someone whose life was hard, whose life wasn't going anywhere in particular, but who'd fight for the chance for happiness to the death if he had to. Everything else came as I wrote him. I'm told I'm very good at on-the-fly bullshitting.

Favorite fairy tale?
2. Tsarevitch Ivan, the Grey Wolf, and the Firebird, partly because it was made even more epic in its first telling to me by the Stravinsky symphony, and partly because it's a great story.

Favorite way to write?
3. I don't think I understand exactly what you're asking? But when I can I like writing to music with a pen and paper with only candlelight in the room. I like writing vignettes, because it's a specific goal and it's fun to try to write as much as I can with 100 words.

What was your most beloved toy as a child?
4. A stuffed white cat with a pink bow. It was manufactured by Ty, but it isn't a beanie baby. I still have it, though it entered my grandmother's possession when she was ill. It still means a lot to me.

What kind of shoes do you like?
5. Whatever fits. I'm not particular. Unless, by chance, you were to present me with a good pair of tall, black leather steel-toed boots. The I would say to you, HNNG. Because those are gorgeous and make me feel like an HBIC. But I haven't owned a pair personally since I graduated middle school.

Favorite song?
6. ...Give me another lifetime? Okay, no. Um. Let me think, this is actually something I haven't thought about. I think Etta James' "Waiting For Charlie to Come Home" is the likeliest answer? It's just so rich with emotion and longing and Etta's voice is at the height of its glory. The orchestration is lovely, too. It's slow to crescendo, but when it does, it's utterly flawless and gorgeous and, just, my heart. <3333

Favorite pair of literary BFFs?
7. YOU ASK THE TOUGH QUESTIONS, DON'T YOU. Um. I would say Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens, because their friendship is epic and defies heaven and hell and fate and they are awesome and familiar and heartbreakingly witty together, but I ship them like burning so I'm not sure they count. If they don't, then Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen, who I like together so well I thought I shipped them like burning. They are delightful and also awesome, familiar, and heartbreakingly witty together, and I adore them and their lovely friendship so much when I am not crying over the less fortunate Gentlemen Bastards. I've read the summaries for the yet-to-be-written novels, and, well, I'll be holding onto my heart the rest of the way.

How much do you really love 2NE1?
1. Haha, my interest in them is purely casual, but I like them well enough. They're fun and energetic, which is awesome for working out to, but I think they're good, but not great.

What is your musical background?
2. I was raised on a steady stream of classic rock - Electric Light Orchestra, the Beatles, Aerosmith, Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, whatever my mom listened to, before I discovered the radio had more than three channels and had the misfortune of discovering the local popular music station. I then spent a few years infatuated with System of a Down, the Spice Girls, Godsmack, Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock, OK Go, and Destiny's Child before then discovering Napster and the glory of everything else. The moment I picked up my first Final Fantasy - which was VIII - I sought out video game scores like mad, and the ones I adored then I still adore now; Yasunori Mitsuda, whose score for Chrono Cross was the first album I bought with my own money, Nobuo Uematsu, Koichi Sugiyama, and Michiru Yamane among the ones I remember most. I was such an elitist hipster in high school - I listened to indie like it was heavenly salvation (the Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Neko Case in particular), and I got into musicals and cabaret music around that time, too. I bought Tom Waits on a whim once, and though it took me a while to get used to his, ah, unique voice, he quickly became one of my favorite musical artists of all time. He still is. I discovered the blues when I heard Junior Wells' "She Wants to Sell My Monkey" on the radio (hooray for living in Chicagoland!) and learned and bought everything I could about it. It was a dream for years to celebrate my birthday at Buddy Guy's Legends when I turned twenty-one, and I learned an important lesson about peer pressure when I gave into it and went to prom and missed Koko Taylor - she died shortly after. In my music history class, I discovered I actually quite liked jazz and classical music, genres I previously associated with feeble old octogenarians. Jean Sibelius, Chopin, Wagner, Saint-Saens, Stravinsky, and Beethoven were particularly beloved, and as for jazz I fell immediately in love with the talented, douchey Charles Mingus to the point I considered moving to Nogales, Arizona just to stand on the same land he was born in. Now I make obsessive use of Spotify when I want to find new music. It's a very precious part of my life.

...I HAVE A LOT OF FEELS ABOUT MUSIC, OKAY.

Do you have voices imagined for your characters?
3. Some of them. Cyprian is a baritone, I know, while Jaida is a mezzo-soprano (she can't sing on key, but I always thought of her as such), and whenever I imagine Helene lately she is Diamanda Galas. Valentio is very much a tenor - such a tenor - and Capricia is actually a contralto, which is the lowest possible female register.

Which character from your stories would you most likely want to spend a day with?
4. I would say Cliff. I think he's the sort of person who's very pleasant and friendly to be around even if he doesn't know you, and he knows how to make a good time.

Where do you get inspiration from?
5. Here and there, wherever I can. Down By the Water emerged nearly fully-formed in my mind while taking a walk in mid-autumn and staring at a lamp post, and Helene exists mostly because I watched too much Takarazuka on YouTube and found myself thinking, "These women would make awesome serial killers." I recently began reading a novel called Alice & Dorothy by JW Schnarr that's given me a few things to consider about Holly and Helene's mental link and depicting intimate relationships.

What is your favorite comfort food?
6. Pizza rolls, I'd say, or chimichangas. Really anything with hot cheese and bits of meat.

What mythical creature would you like to meet the most?
7. Unicorns! That would be so delightful. Assuming it wouldn't spear me. Likely it wouldn't.
