Holly!

[malapropism]

1. Holly got her name because I misremembered the story of Baldur's death. It was prophesied that Baldur, a son of Odin, would die, and so Frigga made everything on Earth pledge to never harm him, but she forgot about mistletoe. Loki took advantage of this, and thus it was a sprig of mistletoe that killed Baldur. I, uh. I thought it was a sprig of holly. Spoilers? Kind of? Maybe?
2. Holly is an expy of an older character, Tsubaki Heiwajima. Let's...not get into her, and just say I aged her up and took away her best friend. I missed writing Tsubaki.
3. Holly has had a long-term relationship with a character from one of the magicked books. She only broke up with him because he'd stay the same age forever, and she didn't want to be around the day she would realize she was too old for him.
4. Holly will eventually see reason to collaborate with Helene. It will happen.

Kristen!

[malapropism]

1. Kristen's name comes from two things that were at hand - season one of Veronica Mars, starring one of the most pleasant people in the world, Kristen Bell, and a book published by William Morrow (Anansi Boys, if you're interested).
2. I always imagined Kristen as the most competent and mentally healthy of the main cast. Oddly enough.
3. Kristen very nearly managed to escape Daldain with a good friend two years before she met Cliff, but unfortunately that friend was unreliable and flighty. Ultimately, between the distance and Kristen's resentment, their friendship didn't survive, and Kris is much warier of who she trusts.
4. Kristen thinks of marriage mostly as a sort of hollow business arrangement, and Cliff really has to work to get her to agree to marrying him. She never quite understands what it means to Cliff when she says yes.
